American Appraisal enters its seventh year of providing comprehensive data center inventory and reconciliation services for a leading multinational technology and consulting corporation.
For a data center, maintaining the highest levels of data accuracy of server and storage equipment is of vital importance. Clients rely on corporation support teams within data centers to find any security breaches or system malfunctions quickly – and fix these issues before any of their critical business functions are disrupted. Accurate inventory records can help a data center pinpoint which asset is involved, where it is located and what will be needed to fix the issue.
To minimize disruptions to its clients’ accounts, one leading multinational technology and consulting corporation takes a proactive approach to maintaining the integrity of its data center assets. Each year, it undergoes an independent inventory and reconciliation of a fixed sample - typically about 33% - of its data centers. This allows for a three-year cycle of comprehensive inventory and reconciliation of the entire enterprise – and optimal support and remediation for the critical business and data applications that the corporation hosts and supports in these centers.
American Appraisal’s specialized focus on information technology (IT) asset inventory services, as well as our demonstrated skill and professionalism working within this unique environment, led the corporation to select us as its trusted service provider for a seventh consecutive year.
This year, American Appraisal will perform primarily a book-to-floor-inventory targeting more than 65,000 assets in 15 major and 20 minor data centers throughout the United States and Canada. Current configuration management data supplied by the corporation will be loaded into our custom-programmed handheld computers and used to find specific assets on the data center floor.
For each asset discovered, American Appraisal will:
Verify precise location information down to the building, floor, room, grid, cabinet name, rack unit and slot of the asset
Capture accurate data on make, manufacturer, model, serial, host name, asset tag and status
Provide RFID tagging services to upgrade the asset management capabilities of certain data center facilities
As work at each data center site concludes, American Appraisal will:
Work with client personnel to perform reconciliation and matching queries with the data, to identify net new or missing assets
Work with the hardware planners at each site to conduct a final inventory for any unfound assets
Review the final reconciliation results with the hardware planners to try to determine the status of any missing assets (moved, decommissioned, disposed, repurposed, etc.)
The entire project is estimated to last 10-12 weeks, during which American Appraisal will provide the corporation with daily status reports, schedule updates, site signoffs and weekly, scrubbed data feeds and reconciliation results.
