Michael Weaver, FCA, MRICS

Mike leads American Appraisal's UK practice and is chairman of the global firm's Strategic Advisory Board.

He has 16 years of valuation and advisory experience, having started his career at PwC in 1995. He left PwC's Valuation and Strategy division in 2002 to start his own valuation business with a number of other senior PwC colleagues to take advantage of the continuing move towards independent advice. His business was purchased by American Appraisal in 2005.

Mike is on the Committee of the Valuation Special Interest Group at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, is a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors' Business Valuation division, and is an active participant in driving the future of the valuation profession globally. He is regularly appointed by the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants to opine on valuation issues in litigation proceedings and regularly lectures on the subject of business, share and option valuation techniques.

He has significant experience of valuing all types of financial assets, including businesses, shares, complex financial instruments and intangible assets for a variety of purposes, including for M&A deals, restructuring, litigation, expert witness, business strategy, and tax and financial reporting. As American Appraisal have continued to extend their service offering, Mike has been assisting clients with:

His recent client experience includes:

  • Providing annual or semiannual portfolio valuations for a number of investment management groups and hedge funds
  • Leading the valuations of two European businesses acquired by a global defence group for around £400 million
  • Opining on the valuation of a global music group prior to a restructuring
  • Assisting a client in the leisure industry with their strategy, business plan and modelling
  • Providing litigation support to a leading global investment bank
  • Leading a sale mandate for a marketing services company
  • Providing transfer pricing advice to a US company with operations around Europe
  • Leading the valuation of a global auto parts manufacturer prior to a restructuring on behalf of one of the world's largest investment banks
  • Valuing securities in a private equity owned, global printing business worth around £500 million prior to a transaction
  • Leading the purchase price allocation for a large multinational that sold a noncore area of its business for $2 billion, setting the value of the business and the assets in more than 50 tax jurisdictions
  • Providing valuation advice to a number of large investment management companies prior to transactions
  • Providing the valuation of shares in numerous private equity portfolio businesses prior to transactions
  • Providing valuations of life and general insurance companies
  • Providing many valuations of complex financial instruments, including convertible shares, options with complex performance conditions and hurdles, first to default credit linked notes and loan notes with interest paid in shares based on the future share price performance
